Translation Services

Translating a document is much more than just converting a text from one language to another. The golden rule for translating is to have a customised approach to the information, so that the end-document is culturally and context-appropriate and that all the characteristics of the original document are accurately preserved in the translation. Knowing the source and target languages is the minimum requirement for translating but is certainly not the only one. A trained translator and intercultural communicator will ensure that your message is perfectly conveyed, with no ambiguities, spelling or grammar errors, in a flowing style that is tailored to your specific needs.

I pride myself on my attention to detail and understanding of cultural specificities. I specialise in documents translation in the English-French language pair. I can also help proofread your texts in either language, and offer a transcription service too. I am particularly interested in the fields of education, culture, the arts and literature but can help with other areas of translation.

All translations are human-generated and follow a rigorous process:

  • Translation brief analysis. This is a crucial part of the process to ensure the translated text has the impact you want: who is the intended audience of the translated text? Where and how will it be published? What is the purpose of the text?
  • Text analysis to ensure understanding of the intention, tone, vocabulary and specific features of the source text.
  • Research of the semantic fields linked to the topic of the translation.
  • Creation of relevant glossaries / style guides.
  • Use of reference materials such as dictionaries and parallel texts to ensure that the vocabulary, tone and flow of the translation match the type and context of the source text.
  • Quality control: all translations are thoroughly proofread, checked against the source text and edited before final submission.

Communication is key to me, and I will ensure that you are kept up to date with the progress of your project.

Eagle eye proofreading:

Why risk handing in a text, whether it is an essay, a Master’s thesis or a book, in French, without having it proofread by a professional? Would you risk overlooking a few details, punctuation, syntax or verb agreement mistakes? To avoid this, contact me.

Transcription:

Transcription means transforming an oral discourse into written discourse. I provide the transcription of audio-visual media (tapes, CD, DVD, MP3, among others) in French and in English. Do you have an audio recording of a court hearing? Do you have a video of an interview and would like to put all the questions and answers on paper? Have you produced a documentary and now you want all the information written in a file? Get in touch! I can also translate the contents of your documents.

  • Stéphanie had already delivered several successful language staff meetings in our primary school and I knew she would be the perfect person to do a mini deep dive into the French curriculum I had created. Prior to her visit, Stephanie had looked closely at my long-term plans as well as our school website. There was no time wasted on the day. Stephanie analysed the class floor books, looking for progression. She made some valuable suggestions regarding implementing a systematic approach to the three pillars of language learning, with a stronger focus on phonics. Stephanie is knowledgeable and is a true advocate of language learning. She is also enthusiastic and a pleasure to work with.
